I was just trying to answer this question myself today. I take photos to capture a moment, not for artsy purposes, so I came to the conclusion for me it’s cheating. Not that I don’t do it. But it is a little like getting a boob job….it’s just not the real thing.

I am learning to do this as well, enhancing, I dont think it is wrong at all, its a photo, and it is about what you love and the look of the picture. I love the crispness of the first pic, but I love the the softer tone as well. I think these two pics can be used in different setting’s, plus I always keep the original. I would have loved her side profile with the softer tone as well. I love my camera. I cannot wait to take it to the Cayman Islands in May. I have to get the new lens quickly…

I would probably prefer a combination of the two. A little less enhancement than there was on the second one. The picture on other post (the John Denver post) I just loved, It is gorgeous.

Depends on the photo whether I think retouching is cheating. It matters what effect you’re going after.

In this case, I personally like the second one, unless you were going to do something edgy with it (don’t ask me what, I have no idea).

I always keep the original of my pics before I mess with them, so I know what I started with.

Which is why I just deleted 1200 pictures today. Freakin’ computer pack rat, I am.

I like the second one, too.

I go through the same wonderings – am I altering my memories by tweaking photos? Or am I just fixing? Perhaps I’m helping the photo match my memories. I dunno.

I like them both, but I think the second one is prettier. It’s so cool we can do this with computers – back when my dad was a pro photographer he had to use special filters and lenses, and touch-ups were done by a lab!
