and baby makes 6!

It's just another day in paradise

A Merry Christmas give away!

There are few gadgets that really impress me.

Calculators will always be close to my heart, as 4 kids have reduced my mathematical mind to mush.

You all know my love for cameras. ‘Nuff said there.

IPods are pure genius. I would love to have an iPhone so that I could combine my love for gabbing with my love for music.

And then there is my computer. Or as Billy formally has named it….his competition.

The rest of the stuff I walk past on the shelves while shopping, and never feel much of a pull towards them.

Then I received a package in the mail that has changed Bill”s my life for the better. Let me introduce the “move over surf board, you have been replaced as a strange bed fellow” gadget……….the SmartShopper Electric Grocery List Organizer.

I received an e-mail asking if I would like to review the SmartShopper over the holidays, and after clicking on the link, realized that this gadget might just make me a better person.

See, I have a big problem. I forget things. Like, all the time. We will run out of trash bags, and Bill will say “We are out of trash bags”, which translates to “Please get trash bags the next time you go to the store” and then the rest is a blur. I will go to the store, and buy everything BUT trash bags. Then a day later I will go to the store again, and come home with 10lbs of oranges that were on sale, but no trash bags.

The trash? It becomes the big, pink elephant in the room that no one wants to talk about. We start using those tiny plastic grocery bags in our 30 gallon trash can. I sneak the big stuff to the outside trash can, like a drunk hiding her bottles, and vow to remember TRASH BAGS when I go to the store the next time.

Then the incredible happens. I go, and come home with $230 in groceries and, you guessed it, NO TRASH BAGS.

And Bill starts sighing heavily. Every time he has to throw something away I feel the weight of the trash bags on my shoulders.

I am completely blond to the bone.

The Smart Shopper is an electronic grocery list organizer. You can add items to your grocery list by pushing “record” and speaking into the machine. It searches the huge data base of 2500 items already pre-loaded into the machine, displays the object of desire, and you press “select” and it adds the item to your list!

I placed mine on my refrigerator (it has magnets built in on the back….very handy) and whenever I come across something I need, I tell it to the SmartShopper, and keep a running list.

When I am ready to head to the store, I select my list (you can keep 2 at the same time) and I hit “print”. The list is printed out, with items organized by categories such as “Dairy” “Canned Goods” “Fresh Produce” and many more. There is also a category called “Errands” where you can list the places you need to visit such as the bank, library, pharmacy or the ever important liquor store. Awesomeness!!

You can even add custom items to the already enormous library. Other additional features are the ability to designate item quantities, flagging for coupons and there is a cooking timer ta boot!! Also, the unit has a magnetic back so you can mount it on your refrigerator. If you have a stainless refrigerator, there are mounting screws included for wall mounting. Or, just leave it on the counter if you like.

I am really enjoying mine. Do you want one??? I am totally pleased to say that in addition to sending me one to review, I was given one to pass on to my readers. Included in this give away will be the unit, 3 rolls of printing paper, grocery item booklet, quick start guide and wall mounting kit.

So, if you would like to win a free Smart Shopper just post a comment below and tell me….do you think you made Santa’s naughty or nice list this year, and what would you like for him to bring you. You have until midnight on Sunday to leave a comment and I will announce a winner on Monday morning!

Naughty or nice? I bet it was nice.

Edit to add: If you are wanting to buy the SmartShopper as a gift, the coupon code for $5 off is: JB94528 This is good through December 31st.

  1. I would love to have this! I think I’ve made his Nice List, well it might be close but I think I’m OK. In a dream world, Santa would bring me a Nikon D80! ;-)

  2. What a cool gadget!!

    Mary

i’m hoping mine will lean towards nice. i’ve been working on it this year as i’ve been to africa feeding and doctoring [first aid type] children AND i recently spent 2 days visiting women in prison here in texas. ok, i’m pulling out all the stops now cuz i really would love to win that smartshopper, i am the listmaker queen. i really don’t usually make myself a Christmas list cuz i have 6 kiddos and 2 grandkids to buy for but i have been hinting around for an electric toothbrush and a vegetable steamer and now that Smartshopper! me me me!

Well I have tried to be nice all year and even though I have not been feeding the residentially challanged or vaccinating orphans in 3rd world countries I have been stuck in Wisconsin with 3 major snowstorms so far this year our current one Snowstorm Carter is raging as I type this. I have 4 kids and a very forgetful husband who works in a grocery store but refuses to bring anything home (go figure) I also have many many old shopping lists in the bottom of my purse. I could so use this little gadget.. I could finally clean out my purse!
On another note I love your blog and the pics of your kids and the ocean. I found you from being a long time reader of Notes from the trenches.
So come on help a snow bound girl from the Land of cheese and Snow out!

LOL Chris!! Welcome! I love me some Notes from the Trenches too. Never fear, I will be using Random.org to pick the winner. BTW, my fathers family is from Wisconsin too! When you hear of parents telling the stories of how they walked to school in a blizzard, my Dad really did. Oh, and endless stories of he and his brothers digging snow tunnels in the 15 foot snow drifts against their home. I used to beg for him to move us up there, and he was like “No way! I like the warmth of Tejas!”

Sending you warm, blizzard free thoughts from the Texas coast!

YOU SLAY ME!! I don’t want the gizmo – my life is already complicated enough. I don’t even have enough time to take a shower. But I will tell you that I have been to confession on a monthly basis, so I should be on the nice list. I also want a Sissi fish-tailed brown leather parka with fox trim from my favorite store in Seattle. I also want to get an A on my final without trying, and I would like for the Santa elves to write my final exam for my students on Thursday. I would also like several sessions of PT for my rotten neck, and I would like to talk to my oldest friend on the telephone when I am done with school. Whew! Seriously, though. I love the gadget!

  6. I am such a scatterbrain….this thing would be AWESOME FOR ME!

And I have so been a good girl this year!

I would really love for Santa to bring me a Nikon D90 with a few lenses…but I will take whatever :-)

  7. Okay–I am a long-time lurker…mostly because I rarely take the time to comment. So much to read and so little time! My husband considers my laptop his competition as well. I found your blog from Notes From the Trenches also…back in the Big Yellow House days, I believe. All this to say…this is one cool gadget. Now that I have commented, I am going to google it and read up on it…Thanks!

  8. carol Dec 9th 2008

Definitely nice. Thanks for sharing. Carol

  9. Well, my husband mentioned that I’ve made it to his nice list, so hopefully Santa will agree with him! I am hoping for a new set of dishes this year, since mine have a few chips here and there (and get very hot in the microwave).

This gadget is too cool! I can imagine that it would become a nice little friend!! :)

    Thanks!

  10. April Dec 9th 2008

I’d love one of these neato gadgets!!
I totally made Santa’s nice list this year. On my list are: Bath & Body Works Midnight Pomegrante perfume, a Target gift card (loves me some Target), Burt’s bee’s gift set from Target and a gift card to the mall so I can do some clothes shopping.

  11. mindy Dec 9th 2008

I’ve been trying to be nice this year! I don’t really want much for Christmas, seeing my one-year old’s Christmas joy will be enough for me! I could really use this gadget, I’m pregnant and seem to have lost my brain! If I don’t win I’ll have to tell my hubby this is on my wish list!

  12. This cracks me up. I just this month wrote a post about being so freaking forgetful and scatterbrained that I have to tell things to Rob and/or the kids…”I am putting this here. When I freak out because I can’t find it, tell me I PUT IT HERE!” lol

Naughty or nice? Both, depending on the situation, of course! And what do I want? I wanted slippers to replace the lost ones, but they were found. I would like to wake up thirty pounds thinner. Can I have that? Please? lol

    Leeann

  13. Krista Dec 9th 2008

I’ve never comment here but always enjoyed reading… but I can’t resist a great give-away!

While I’d like to believe that I’m nice on Santa’s list, there are many times when I’m naughty (and not in the way that my husband appreciates!) I’m too impatient, too stubborn, too controlling…. but I’m working on it! And if I could have my wish– Santa would bring a Kitchenaid Mixer.

  14. Mary Anne Dec 9th 2008

    Jody:
I think I must be your blond older sister….. I do the same things all the time!!! I really don’t want any thing other than a job for Christmas. Its hard after 23 years to write out a resume for a nursing job and have people take you seriously.
    ma

  15. I have been so good this year it actually hurt! Wait, you’re not discussing this with Santa before you pick the winners right? ;)

  16. Sarah Dec 9th 2008

OMG – this is beautiful and I have been very naughty with the grocery shopping (like, it is the bane of my existence) but nice in every other way, I PROMISE!. Santa, please bring me this, I would love to try it!

  17. Lol, I will be on Santa’s good list, if only because I make a mean cookie or three.

That thing looks purty handy, indeed.

  18. I’m pretty sure that I’m on the nice list. All I want for Christmas is to have my family together. Pretty sure next Christmas we won’t be all together since my husband will have to deploy. Would love this little gaget to keep on my fridge…so I can remember to get trash bags and toilet paper!!!

  19. Long time lurker but this gadget pulled me out of lurkdom. Jodi, I do so enjoy your family and your values. If I could have one thing for Christmas, and not sound too much like a Miss America Pageant contest, I would like for people everywhere to start smiling again. Economic times are so hard and it seems like people everywhere are having a difficult time finding bliss. So, I wish Bliss to one and all.
Naughty or nice? I’ve been naughty at all the right times and nice all the others.

Thank you for sharing your family with us. I do believe you have found your bliss.

    I love the gadget!!

    Jill

  20. Bonnie Dec 9th 2008

You had me at the print function.
I think I am on the naughty list. I have been really snappy lately. You’d think it was “that time” all day every day. You know it’s bad when you are self aware!

  21. OMG! Even if I don’t win here I am adding that to my Christmas list! That is so amazing! I have one of those magnetic notepads stuck on my fridge and it is so haphazard that I never get half the stuff I need written down.

I am so on the nice list this year!

  22. Andrea Payne Dec 9th 2008

I hope I made Santa’s nice list. Although there may be a few people that would differ with that. This gadget is so cool. Even if I don’t win, I may just have to look at getting one. A mind is a terrible thing to loose.

  23. At first I was thinking… hmmm, scrolling through that at the store would be difficult and time consuming and I like to see the whole list… blah blah blah.

And THEN I saw the print out. That final step made it pretty cool. :) Still, I have my little sticky note magnet pad on the side of the fridge and I keep repeating and repeating; Write it down! LOL.

  24. So I would have said I am on the nice list but I just told my husband that I think I am prego with our 4th, and he was “done” after two, so I think I have quickly descended to the coal list. :) Jodi, I have read your blog for awhile now and love how you focus on the fun of parenting. We live on the coast as well and I enjoy seeing your photos and beach trips.
    Chris

  25. Love the gadget!! Hmmm….I think I’m on Santa’s nice list (but my DH’s “naughty” list but in a good way *wink*). The only thing I want for Christmas is a peaceful and joy-filled season with my children.

  26. Too Cool–Must have one –it would save me lots of money because everytime I go to the store for that one thing I don’t have I come home with several things I don’t need–told Santa I want an IPOD–We will see how good I have been on X-Mas–if he brings it then I know I was good–

  27. I do that with the trash bags,…and the cat food, ….and the….you get the idea. Oh, and I’m nicely naughty.

  28. You have no idea how much I NEED this.
Santa, I have been ministering to the medical needs of the poorest of poor in Guatelmala, taking care of my 4 kids AND husband and working 3 jobs. Does that put me on the NICE list?

  29. Pick me Oh random generator..pick me! :) I am blond thru and thru, too! LOL

  30. This would make life on our island so much easier…. I need, I want, I must have one… ~Diana

  31. I have been extremely good this year and I feel very blessed even though our little island was devastated by Ike. I don’t have much of a memory these days so this would be a great gift!

  32. You sure got all the lurkers out with this one! I’ve been nice, and this giveaway is very nice too.

  33. Shelley Dec 10th 2008

What do I want for XMas? I want jobs for the jobless, homes for the homeless, good medical care for all, and plenty of food for the hungry. I think that makes me pretty nice, right?

Now, hand over the damn gadget! Okay, I’m naughty too.

    LOVES it!!

  34. This is actually on my list!! I really would love to have this gadget….
    Pretty cooooool

sorry I forgot to tell the truth, very nice, nice indeed!!

  35. Of COURSE! Add my name to the pot! With three little ones, something like this would be awesome! Glad to hear it’s got a good review! It sounds pretty easy to use, which is great too!

As far as the naughty or nice list? I’d love to say nice ’cause I’ve mostly been, but I admit that I’ve been naughty too. Santa already brought me an iPod that I’ve yet to find time to play with to figure out how to use! LOL!

  36. Melissa Dec 11th 2008

Hmmmm….I would say Nice list! And this item is AWESOME. I have looked at it many a times on the internet BUT don’t have the moola to buy it right now.

  37. Jodi,
With 3 kids in college, alas, I am not asking for much this year, but this, this looks very intriguing! I’m going to check it out and hope I win! Thanks!

  38. Roses are Red
    Jodi is sweet-
    Help me remember
What to pick up to eat!
I’ve been mostly good this year.
    mostly.
    *grin*

Oh, and I hope Santa brings my husband a job.

  39. I love it!! I have 5 littles so my brain is absolutely a little mushy. My 12yo has resorted to taping multiple notes around to remind me of things. Love your blog!

  40. Am I too late? I’m on the nice list…….I think :)

  41. Theresa Dec 12th 2008

Since Santa allows for occasional bad days, I figure I’ve still made the nice list. I’d love a new digital camera since mine is slowly dying, but now is not the time to be spending money of that magnitude.

The Smart Shopper seems not only practical, but FUN FUN FUN!

  42. I am going for the nice list although I have my naughty moments quite frequently!
LOVE THIS GADGET!!!! Cannot believe there IS such a thing!

That is amazing!!! AND, it even has a magnet on the back?!?!?!? I LOVE IT!

  43. I am working hard on being nice!! Homeschooling four children and having a needy preschooler has made being nice very difficult some days!!!

After all your hard work to describe this wonderful gadget, I want this FOR SURE!!!!

  44. I have no memory right now from being pregnant and I don’t think it is going to improve soon, so I could definitely use this!!

  45. This would be perfect for my family! Thank you for posting it and bringing it my attention!

  46. melrose Dec 14th 2008

cool gadget! i’m a forgetful gadget freak so this is right up my alley! i’m leaning towards being a good girl this year who really doesn’t need anything. i’m decluttering & donating to charity. i feel lighter because of it.

    love your photo skills–happy holidays!

  47. BethAnn Dec 14th 2008

Hmmm…I’m a nice gal..but how nice is nice enough? We had a pastor from Liberia at our church this morning and after seeing all his pictures and hearing of his experience here for the first time, it is hard to really come up with anything I need. I’m grateful my hubby still has his job (we’re in Michigan and he works for an automotive supplier) and I want us all to focus on the relationships and being together this year rather than on the stuff. I guess that’s what I’d like Santa to bring me..a big dose of focus on what’s really important….Sorry to be all philosophical on my very first post here!!

  48. I made the nice list and I would love for Santa to bring me a Hurricane free season pass for at least the next 10 seasons :) No more shelter in place, hunker down or non perishable can foods :)
