I think your decision is/was awesome. I use to run 3 daycares and even tough this was not my place to let the older boys watch this movie we would talk about the outcome of war. I also gave them the oppurtunity to do Christmas Cards and etc for the vets, and active to get them involved. Wish more parents were like you instead of letting them live in the dream land that they can be shot and etc and walk away fine.

I have a 17 year old son who has already thought about enlisting, he has already seen private Ryan along time ago. We have a family member who is a chaplain in the army and will go to war with his soldiers soon.
I cannot make my son’s choice for him and will support him in whatever he chooses, I also pray this war will end…. soon.
Great post Jody, I believe your choice was great and you and Bill are wonderful parents. I wish my son still had his dad.

That movie was one of the most moving movies I’ve ever watched on war. I have been military my whole life and still was stunned at the up close and personal view of what war really meant for those boys.
Good for you to instill the seriousness at what those men are doing in a war. Good for you for teaching them.

That’s a wise decision on your part. I wish that my brother and sister-in-law would follow your example. My nephew is consumed with war games and it makes me sick to my stomach that he wants to be in the army because of crap he sees in video games. He has no idea of the pain of war (which you have seen in your life) — and that you cannot “start over.” Again, Bravo to you — what a good mother you are.

I think it is great that you allowed them to watch it. People gasp when we say we talk about death it is a fact of life, nothing glorious about it. I applaud you for showing your kids a great example of something. Those that gasp are probably those that let their children play those games, saying “it’s just a game”.

We’ve approached this several times- most recently in talking about what is happening in the beginning of Narnia. The kids always want to know who the bad guy is (neither side) and why the kids have to leave (to keep them safe). We revisit this each time they watch. Good conversations, including standing up for what you believe in, death, war, peace…

Pike (11) just recently saw it; Jesse (13) hasn’t (I think) and I personally, have yet to watch the entire movie (interrupted by the girls and I’m not going to let them watch it (8 and 6). So far, I’ve only seen when he gets the medal, Wallace shooting, Kennedy shootings… Sounds like there is MUCH more to it. THank you for your post!

I think it would be a problem if you just let your sons watch it for the entertainment of watching a movie. It sounds like you had a true sense of purpose and discussion. There was teaching involved. You sound like an amazing mother.

I applaud your choice. Someday mine will see it too. And we’ll talk about it. And we’ll honor those who serve. And we’ll grieve for the loss. But, you made a good choice. Because those games and those “see the world, get an education” attitudes make me so mad. War is so very scary. I have my own nightmares about it. I can’t even imagine the real thing. And I’m so thankful for those who serve to protect us.
